In Serbia, as in European Union countries, people face discrimination, violence, abuse and harassment on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity across many areas of life. The extent to which the fundamental rights of LGBTI+ people are respected in Serbia is difficult to assess, because there is no national data collection system and no reliable data on how widespread the various forms of discrimination are, particularly as experienced by LGBTI+ people themselves.
The aim of the project is to gather data on the situation of LGBTI+ people in our society and on the challenges they face day to day. The research aims to make those challenges more visible and provide the evidence needed to develop policies and measures that secure full respect for the human rights of LGBTI+ people. Decision-makers will also be able to use the findings to identify priority areas for action more effectively, and to monitor the effects of relevant policies. The survey will be conducted through an anonymous online questionnaire, so that people who are not open about their sexual orientation and gender identity can take part.
The research was funded from IDEAS’ own resources, as part of the organisation’s strategic work on improving the quality of data relevant to respect for and the advancement of citizens’ human rights. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Regional Info Centre (Regionalni info centar).
